They inhabit tropical Indo-Pacific reefs, a region that includes the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and much of the western Pacific. They prefer shallow waters with abundant coral, crevices, and caves where they find food and shelter.

Extraordinary diversity of colors, sizes, and behaviors.

Parrotfish grind coral to feed on the algae growing on it, and their waste becomes white sand.

The emperor angelfish changes color completely as it matures, shifting from a hypnotic blue-and-white pattern to vivid shades of gold and blue.

Goatfish use their "whiskers" to find small invertebrates hidden in the sand.

Long-snouted fish can alter their color to blend into their surroundings.

DID YOU KNOW?

•Much of the white sand on tropical beaches is, quite literally, parrotfish poop. A single fish can produce up to 100 kilograms of sand in a year.

•Many parrotfish can change sex during their lifetime: they may begin as females and transform into dominant males.

•Goatfish use their whiskers as sensors to search for food beneath the sand, something most fish cannot do.

•A clownfish can spend its entire life in the same anemone, protected by a special mucus coating that prevents the stinging tentacles from harming it.
