They inhabit warm, shallow waters in the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the western Pacific, from East Africa to Australia, especially in areas with seagrass meadows.
It is an herbivorous marine mammal, and close relative of the manatee.
It can grow up to 3 meters long and weigh more than 400 kilograms.
It has a robust body, thick skin, and small eyes adapted to low visibility.
It breathes air: must return to the surface every few minutes, although it can hold its breath for up to six minutes.
It feeds exclusively on seagrass, pulling it up with its flexible, shovel-shaped snout.
DID YOU KNOW?
•Dugongs can live for 60 to 70 years, a similar lifespan to that of elephants.
•A female usually gives birth to only one calf every three to seven years, one of the slowest reproductive rates among marine mammals.
•Legends of mermaids may have been inspired by dugongs. Ancient sailors sometimes mistook them for human figures when they saw them nursing their calves from a distance.
•As they feed, they leave long trails through seagrass beds, as though someone had run an underwater lawn mower across them.
Because the dugong reminds us that strength does not always make noise. Sometimes the greatest strength is found in calm.
