They live on reefs in the Red Sea and the western Indian Ocean, always very close to, or inside, their inseparable companion: the anemone. They protect one another. The anemone provides shelter, while the fish protects it from predators and keeps it clean.
Unlike many clownfish, which have three white bands, the Red Sea clownfish (Amphiprion bicinctus) has only two: one behind the head and another across the middle of the body.
It is native to the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, a region of the western Indian Ocean where it lives in association with reefs and anemones.
It spends its entire life within or very close to its anemone, forming small hierarchical communities that depend on it for protection.
Although it is only a few centimeters long, it aggressively defends its anemone against much larger fish.

• All clownfish are born male. If the dominant female dies, the leading male changes sex and becomes the group’s new female.
• The father cares for the eggs. He fans them with his fins and cleans them constantly until the larvae hatch.

• Their skin is covered in a special mucus layer. It makes them immune to the anemone's toxins, which would be lethal to most other fish.
Because their relationship with the anemone reminds us that finding a place where we feel safe does not make us weaker. It allows us to be who we are.
