They inhabit tropical seas around the world, especially in the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans.

They grow in warm, clear, shallow waters, where sunlight allows the algae living inside them to produce energy.

Corals are animals, not plants: they belong to the cnidarian group, alongside jellyfish and anemones.

They form colonies made up of thousands of tiny animals called polyps.

Hard corals create calcium carbonate skeletons that give the reef its structure.

Soft corals have no rigid skeleton; they move like branches or flowers beneath the water. They grow slowly, layer upon layer, over centuries.

Some Red Sea reefs are thousands of years old.

They are extremely sensitive to temperature changes and pollution.

DID YOU KNOW?

•More than 25% of marine life depends on coral reefs, even though reefs occupy less than 1% of the ocean. In other words, one out of every four ocean species depends on them.

•The Red Sea is home to one of the world’s coral systems most resilient to global warming. Corals in this region have developed a genetic tolerance to heat that allows them to survive conditions that would destroy other reefs.

• Many corals synchronize their reproduction with the full moon, releasing millions of gametes at the same time in an extraordinary natural spectacle.

• More than 200 coral species live in the Red Sea, forming one of the most diverse reef systems in the world.

Because without the reef, there is no Red Sea. Without the Red Sea, there is no diving. And without diving, this book would not exist.
