They inhabit temperate, tropical, and some cold-temperate waters around the world, including the Red Sea, the Mediterranean, and the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans.
A robust, streamlined body, gray with a paler underside.
A short, rounded snout that gives them their characteristic "smile."
Extremely social and intelligent: they live in groups called pods and cooperate when hunting.
They communicate through a complex range of sounds, whistles, and clicks.
They can swim faster than 30 kilometers per hour and leap as high as 5 meters.
DID YOU KNOW?
• They can recognize themselves in a mirror, a sign of self-awareness shared by very few animals.
• They sleep with only one hemisphere of the brain at a time. The other remains alert so they can continue breathing and watch for predators.
• They have been observed helping sick dolphins, injured sharks, and even humans lost at sea.
• Every dolphin has a unique whistle, a kind of personal "name" through which they recognize one another.
