They live in every ocean on Earth, from tropical waters to the polar regions.

They are soft-bodied marine mollusks without shells, found in an extraordinary variety of forms.

They breathe through external gills, visible as branching structures on their backs.

They range in size from a few millimeters to more than 30 centimeters.

Their vivid colors are not merely decorative: they serve to camouflage them or warn that they are toxic.

Their diet includes sponges, soft corals, anemones, and even other nudibranchs.

DID YOU KNOW?

• The famous Spanish Dancer, one of the largest nudibranchs in the Red Sea, can grow to over 40 centimeters and swims with an undulating motion resembling flamenco dancing, which inspired its name.

• Some nudibranchs are “biological thieves”: they steal pigments, toxins, or even photosynthetic cells from their prey and incorporate them into their own bodies.

• They are hermaphrodites. Every nudibranch has both male and female reproductive organs but still needs another individual to reproduce.

• They lay their eggs in spirals or coiled ribbons that look like flowers. Hundreds or thousands of eggs are deposited in these structures, and each species has its own distinctive design.

Because they remind us that no one is born as the person they will become. We take shape layer by layer, through time, learning, and experience.
