MORE THAN 1,200 FISH SPECIES INHABIT THE RED SEA, ONE OF

THE MOST DIVERSE MARINE ECOSYSTEMS ON THE PLANET.

WHERE
THEY
LIVE

They inhabit mainly tropical Indo-Pacific seas, including the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific.

They are found on coral reefs, in lagoons, and in warm coastal areas, where they find food and shelter.

An extraordinary diversity of shapes, colors, and survival strategies.

The Sohal surgeonfish is territorial and has a sharp, scalpel-like spine near its tail.

The yellow boxfish can release toxins when stressed.

Pufferfish inflate themselves with water when threatened, and many species contain extremely potent neurotoxin.

Some damselfish cultivate and defend small "gardens" of algae within the reef.

Many butterflyfish depend directly on living coral for food, which makes their presence an indicator of reef health.

DID YOU KNOW?

• The yellow boxfish inspired Mercedes-Benz's "Bionic Car" prototype. Its rigid, stable form reduces turbulence in the water, leading engineers to study it as a model of efficient movement.

Triggerfish build nests in the sand and defend their territory aggressively, even against animals much larger than themselves.

• The toxin found in some pufferfish can be up to one thousand times more potent than cyanide.

• The Sohal surgeonfish is endemic toelsewhere the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden: it lives nowhere else on Earth.
