They inhabit tropical and subtropical seas across most of the world, especially the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, where the water is warm and filled with light.

They have a large, smooth shell ranging in color from olive green to dark brown.

They usually measure between 80 centimeters and 1.2 meters, although some individuals grow larger.

Their typical weight ranges from 65 to 200 kilograms. The largest individuals may exceed that range.

As juveniles, they eat small marine animals. As adults, they become almost entirely herbivorous, feeding on seagrass and algae.

They breathe air. At rest, they can remain underwater for long periods.

They have long lives and may live for many decades, with estimates ranging from 50 to 80 years or more.

鈥reen turtles do not have just one habitat. Their lives unfold in two stages, each in a different environment. Their world changes as they grow: a hatchling does not live in the same kind of place as an adult.

鈥dult females return to the same beach where they were born, even after crossing thousands of kilometers of ocean. They navigate using Earth鈥檚 magnetic field, as though carrying an internal compass.

鈥he temperature of the sand determines the sex of the hatchlings: warmer sand produces more females, while cooler sand produces more males.

鈥 single nest can hold between 80 and 120 eggs, and a female may lay several clutches during one nesting season.

Because they take their time with everything. And still, they arrive. Sometimes that is exactly what we need to remember: moving slowly is still moving forward.
