THERE ARE AROUND 20 SPECIES OF UNICORNFISH IN THE WORLD, AND NOT ALL OF THEM HAVE A HORN.

LIVE
They inhabit tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, including the Red Sea and as far as the Hawaiian Islands.
They prefer the outer areas of reefs, where currents are strong and algae are abundant.
They usually swim alone or in small groups, especially near reef slopes.
It has a rigid protrusion on the forehead that resembles a horn, giving the fish its common name.
Its body is elongated, with bluish-gray coloring, and can reach lengths of 50 and 70 centimeters.
It has two sharp spines at the base of its tail, which are used for defense.
It feeds mainly on brown and green algae, scraping them from rocks with specialized teeth.
It swims with slow, elegant movements but can be surprisingly fast when it feels threatened.
DID YOU KNOW?
•The "horn" appears only in adults, and its function is still not fully understood. It may help individuals recognize one another or signal maturity.
•At the base of the tail are two extremely sharp spines known as "scalpels," which can be used for defense or during territorial disputes.
•It can shift slightly in color depending on its mood or to blend into its surroundings.
•In some adult species of the genus Naso, the horn can grow beyond 10 centimeters and continue growing with age.
Because the unicornfish reminds us that nature never stops surprising us. Just when we think we have seen it all, something appears that awakens our sense of wonder again.
